Colombia Challenge your Knowledge
::: Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia

The Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia - EIA, (Antioquia School of Engineering) is a private higher education institution, focusing on engineering studies, located in the second largest city of Colombia, Medellin. It was founded on the 14th of February 1978 by a group of 27 engineers, as a non-profit organization, aiming to solve social and technical problems. Throughout its history the School has been recognized for the formation of professionals of high academic and personal qualities.

The mission of the School lies in the integral formation of high-quality professionals in undergraduate and graduate programs, promotion of applied research and interaction with society that will result in the technological, economic, cultural, and social development of the nation. As an academic community, it promotes a global vision, creativity, teamwork, the improvement of quality of life and a respect for natural surroundings, all based on principles of ethics and justice.

In order to carry out its mission, EIA has focused on six aspects of university education: undergraduate, graduate, continuing education, research, extension, advisory and consultancy services. Special attention is given to the three following areas: Creativity, productivity, and business technology; Transformation and care of the environment; Health technology.

In March 2010, the Colombian Minister of Education and the CNA (National Accreditation Board) conferred the Institutional High Quality Accreditation to Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia – EIA. Thus, the Escuela de Ingeniería de Antioquia – EIA is the 18th institution in Colombia that obtains this certification among the 280 higher education institutions in the country.

Forming high quality engineers with a global vision

With about 1800 students and 3500 alumni, the EIA is authorized by the Colombian Ministry of Education to award bachelor degrees (10 semesters of study) in the following areas:

  • Biology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Computer Sciences Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Industrial Engineering
  • Management Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Mechatronics Engineering

The Biomedical Engineering and Biology degrees are offered jointly with the CES University), another higher education institution authorized by the Ministry of Education to offer graduate and undergraduate programs in medicine and dentistry.

EIA graduate programs include: Master of Science in Strategic Marketing (double degree program with the University of Glasgow), Master of Biomedical Engineering, and certificates in Project Management, Production and Services Management, Corporative Finance, Global Marketing Management and Urban Management and Processes, Environmental Business, Energy Projects and Applied Statistics.

The EIA offers several courses in English at bachelor level, mainly in Business Administration themes. At graduate level, the first semester of the Master of Science in Strategic Marketing takes place on the EIA campus and is fully taught in English. Summer School programs will soon be offered in English on “Tropical Ecosystems” and “Climate Change”.

In order to ensure an international dimension, the EIA has formalized agreements for academic collaborations with 53 foreign universities. One of the main purposes is the increase of student and professors’ mobility, but also the development of joint research projects and postgraduate programs (Masters or PhD).

In addition to our international collaborations, the University has also signed agreements with well-known local universities, such as Universidad de Los Andes, Universidad de Antioquia, Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana – UPB, Universidad CES, Escuela Colombiana de Ingeniería – ECI, Universidad del Norte and Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira to share resources, develop joint projects and other extension activities.

Innovating for the society development

The EIA defines itself as a higher education institution where research activities strongly contribute to its undergraduate and postgraduate engineering programs and to the school environment. The EIA research activities do not constitute the unique or principal component of development and innovation but catalyze innovation across the different functions of the institution. EIA research projects are thus organized according to the following institutional strategic fields and transversal areas:

The EIA applied research activities develop innovative projects to contribute to the country progress through continuous interactions with private companies and governmental institutions. Thus, the EIA gives a high priority to technology transfer in each of its 10 research groups:

  • Biology
  • Theoretical and Applied Physics
  • Hydrological Research and Science Education
  • Structures and Construction
  • Management, Productivity and Competitiveness
  • Environmental Management
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Software Engineering and Computational Modeling
  • Mobility, Land Planning and GIS
  • Alternative Materials and Automatic Processes

Entrepreneurships that impact the world

To contribute to Colombia´s entrepreneurship goal, the EIA wishes to encourage and generate the appropriate atmosphere to create new companies. Given its status, the EIA will promote the rise of technology and knowledge based companies.

The EIA operates a dynamic system that "spawns" projects to create technology based companies and provide entrepreneurs with the necessary skills needed to manage innovative projects and increase the probability of success in its respective market.

This dynamic system is specifically reflected in the Campus BT program, developed in collaboration with MIT Enterprise Forum Colombia, which provides the following tools: Steady stream of projects or initiatives via the e-Lab, Design of Global Business Plans, Access to Business Angels, early-stage Marketing, Legal Advice, Negotiation and Communication, and Financial evaluation of inversion projects.
The program proposes different modules, organized through workshops that are scheduled according to participant demand and program requirements. As the program aims at providing a practical and experience based formation, expert facilitators are given at least 10% of the workshop time to give direct consultancy towards participant’s projects, products or deliverables. These experts do not only supervise the theoretical or practical activities involved in the classroom, but also guide participants to obtain thorough business and entrepreneurial skills.
